CHARACTER
Name: Legolas
Canon: Tolkien's Legendarium
Age: (according to Peter Jackson- 2,931) His age is never stated by Tolkien- he is likely 700 - 800 years of age during Lord of the Rings; if we're going off events that he recalls. Making him the youngest (recorded) elf in the books.
Timeline: Post Return of the King.
Items with character at canon point:
The Bow of the Galadhrim, quiver & twenty arrows, small fletching kit, grooming kit, lembas (elvish noms), two long knives for close combat, belt, Lórien cloak with a clasp, leather vambraces, leg wraps, light traveling clothes from his home, a ridiculous circlet courtesy of his father, one formal tunic, a horse named Arod (without a saddle and rein. He is friend, not master. The horse will follow.)
- minus one dwarf off the back of the horse when he arrived.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: n/a
Personality:
Leoglas Thranduilion is of noble descent, from the elves that fled Doriath after it was sacked by dwarves. His grandfather moved a handful of people through the mountains and they settled in with the rustic Nandor. They rose to royalty, ruling over the wood elves (Silvan). Legolas is heir to a throne he never expects to inherit from his father Thranduil, but he does eventually lead many of his father’s people to settle Fangorn forest later on in life. He acts as messenger and guard to King Thranduil. He is unwaveringly loyal to his father and to his people.
Though he grew up without a mother, but was brought up fairly well rounded. I believe his father loved him unconditionally, doting on him every opportunity. He wasn’t old enough to remember when his people cut ties with other nations, closing themselves to the world and that didn’t bother him in the least. He picked up on age old prejudices from stubborn elves, but later overcame these ideas when he befriended a dwarf. He led patrols through his father’s kingdom when he came of age, rising through the ranks with skill and not through privilege.
While he is openly defiant to his king in the hobbit, one could surmise that he is frustrated with the slack his father does allow on his leash. Thranduil may own his heart, but he did not command it. Remnants of teenage rebellion, perhaps?
Legolas is young by most elven standards. While he is wise beyond his years, he does display an often youthfully indifferent attitude towards the struggles of others. Like a majority of the elves, when we first meet him he shares a common prejudice towards dwarves. Gimli and Legolas did not get along one iota and made it very clear there was no room for friendship; possibly because Legolas’s dear father tossed Gimli’s into the dungeons when they tried to cross his realm unchecked. He did eventually strike up a friendship with the dwarf, a most uncommon sight- each promising to accompany one another to the places they had no time to visit while on their quest. If their friendship counted for anything, he smuggled Gimli into the undying lands to look upon Galadriel one last time.
Above all else, Legolas fears being alone. He is prone to sudden outbursts of anger when his emotions are wrongly interpreted as impetuous behavior. I.E. outbursts of anger. He has a temper, but it is often quelled by his often zen mood. A good example of this;
Gimli drew his axe from his belt. Haldir and his companion bent their bows. ‘A plague on Dwarves and their stiff necks!’ said Legolas.
‘Come!’ said Aragorn. ‘If I am still to lead this Company, you must do as I bid. It is hard upon the Dwarf to be thus singled out. We will all be blindfold, even Legolas. That will be best, though it will make the journey slow and dull.’
Gimli laughed suddenly. ‘A merry troop of fools we shall look! Will Haldir lead us all on a string, like many blind beggars with one dog? But I will be content, if only Legolas here shares my blindness.’
‘I am an Elf and a kinsman here,’ said Legolas, becoming angry in his turn.
‘Now let us cry: “a plague on the stiff necks of Elves!”’ said Aragorn. ‘But the Company shall all fare alike. Come, bind our eyes, Haldir!’
In the wake of hopelessness at Helm’s Deep, Legolas seems more frightened than angry. While he wanted to believe that three hundred men were enough to defeat an army of ten thousand orcs, the idea that he could possibly die with these men became very real to this immortal being. He fears dying among strangers and not in the arms of his kin. This fear causes him to lash out at the one person that he could trust the most- Aragorn. Call it fight or flight response. This elf has a temper and most likely gets it from his father. There were only three things that he truly feared:
Balrogs.
Dying alone.
The death of his father.
Legolas has an insatiable curiosity for the world around him. I believe he was very sheltered, as was evident in the hobbit. He grew up in a reclusive environment. The wood-elves of Thranduil’s realm are untrusting of outsiders by nature, but are a happy bunch that revel in wining, dining, singing and merry making. His are a people that marvel at the stars and embrace all nature has to offer. He made it his goal to take an active role in the patrols about their kingdom, learning the ways of a ranger. While this broadened his horizons, it did nothing for the longing to move beyond their borders.
He did not volunteer to go with the fellowship, he was chosen to represent his people. He initially balked at this noble quest but took this role in stride. He became the eyes and ears of the company. Because he was an elf, he was often asked questions about things he had no answer to- instead answering in riddles, lore and speculation. The only history he knew was that of his people, as he had no interest in the politics of other elven kingdoms.
He is the last breath of fresh air in a world no longer fit for the elves. He’s bright-eyed, unnaturally cheerful in the face of great perils. He often plays games to make light of situations he can’t understand, as seen when he and Gimli count their kills during battle. He has an ethereal quality, almost alien to those in the company. He kept his commentary to himself, unless pertinent to the conversation, and often to state the obvious. He speaks Sindarin, though his trade tongue is nearly flawless. He has a heavy accent from the region he was brought up in, and a lovely singing voice.
This all changed when he heard the cry of the sea gulls in Gondor. For elves long for the sea. It was a bittersweet moment for an elf that had never been close enough to the ocean to hear its song. For the rest of his days, he longed to sail to the undying lands.
All in all, Legolas is a steadfast friend and a great ally to have around. He may give you the side eye from time to time, question your motives, but he means well. He’s still learning about the world and his place in it.

Abilities:
“He is as tall as a young tree, lithe, immensely strong, able swiftly to draw a great war-bow and shoot down a Nazgul, endowed with the tremendous vitality of Elvish bodies, so hard and resistant to hurt that he went only in light shoes over rock or through snow. The most tireless of all the Fellowship.”
- J. R. R. Tolkien
Legolas has spent more than half his life training with various weapons. He is a bowman, a swordsman, and even the roguish type with the pair of long knives he carries. He is lethal at a distance and in close combat. He is capable of drawing 150 pounds at a war-bow, and can send arrows flying at over 400 yards.
He could easily be a one man army, but works best with those who compliment his own fighting style. Elves are very light in step, and carry themselves well. He has keen eyesight, sharp hearing, and is very much in tune with his surroundings. He is able to walk atop the snow, calculate precisely where he’s going to end up when he jumps, and balance on even the smallest of surfaces. Or moving in the case of using the heads of dwarves as stepping stones across a raging river.
‘Riders!’ cried Aragorn, springing to his feet ‘Many riders on swift steeds are coming towards us!’
‘Yes,’ said Legolas, ‘there are one hundred and five Yellow is their hair, and bright are their spears. Their leader is very tall.’
Aragorn smiled. ‘Keen are the eyes of the Elves,’ he said
‘Nay! The riders are little more than five leagues distant,’ said Legolas.
- The Two Towers Chapter 2: The Riders of Rohan -
He does require sleep, but his stamina is nearly endless. Elves do not sleep in the conventional way. Their way of sleep is more of a meditative state. He sleeps with his eyes open, blending night and dream. Sleep walking, literally. They can put themselves into sort of a trance, recharging while walking about in their daily lives.
Legolas already lay motionless, his fair hands folded upon his breast, his eyes un-closed, blending living night and deep dream, as is the way with Elves.”

“and he could sleep, if sleep it could be called by Men, resting his mind in the strange paths of elvish dreams, even as he walked open-eyed in the light of this world.”
Ageless would be a better word for the lives of elves. They are immune to disease and do not succumb to age as a human would. They stop physically aging around one hundred years, but their spirits can reflect their true age. They grow weary as time marches on, seeking peace in their everyday lives. They are creatures of insatiable curiosity and are always longing for something. They can be slain in battle and of a broken heart.
They glow. Literally. Not so much that they’ll blind you, but there is an ethereal quality about them. A light that only burns out with an ailing heart. They are creatures of starlight and purity, their very work caused harm to befall evil. A good example of this would be the elven rope given to Sam and used to rein in Gollum. It brought him considerable pain.
Contrary to popular belief, they can get schnockered. It would take a great amount of alcohol to get them to this state. Legolas seems to have inherited his father’s ability to drink wine like water and possibly was having a bit of fun at Gimli’s expense during their drinking game.
He prefers speaking Sindarin to Westron (the common tongue). He doesn’t read or speak Quenya, but not through lack of trying. It’s basically the latin of the elvish languages, only used in incantation or study.
Both genders of elves are equal in all ways. Male elves do a lot of the cooking and child rearing. Legolas is a terrible cook. Do not let him cook. Under any circumstances. It is a very bad idea. It was a skill that he has never taken the time to learn, nor enjoys. He will burn down your home.

[Legolas arrived a short time ago, possibly many days prior to when he made this video. He didn’t stay long in the strange town, venturing out into the wilds to find the dwarf that fell off the back of his horse.
His efforts are in vain, but he still holds out hope.
There’s a long sigh before the prince looks into the camera. He still couldn’t comprehend how such a device worked- let alone being dropped into whatever a train was. Arod hadn’t been entirely happy about that.
The horse behind him nickers, nudging the back of his head.]
I’m searching for someone. A dwarf. Beard, axe, terrible jests. I searched the inn, the wilds. [He looks away for a moment, as if watching something in the distance.] His name is Gimli, we were to visit my home.
I fear he fell from Arod again, but this place is vast. [Dwarves did not belong on horses. Or at least the sheltered ones.] He may not have arrived with me at all. If anyone has witnessed my friend, any information you could provide, I would be in your debt.
Prose Log Sample: It was an unlikely friendship, if one could call it that. Legolas was just as curious about the Naiad as she was about him. He was no human. A prince of the woodland realm in his world, an elf with questionable taste in friends- if you were to ask any elf in his father’s realm.
He’d found the caves by accident, having wandered up and down the coast for some time with Arod. His horse had been spooked out of the sea cave the moment he caught flash of a mer-tail. Legolas delved further into the glittering cave more than any self-respecting elf ought to. He was absolutely fascinated. The sea in this world held no promise to him, made no melodic call. Were it not for the longing tugging at his heart, Legolas would’ve called it a calm that washed over him.
It was by chance that he happened upon the creature. She had been sitting on the edge, pulling the weeds through her hair much like a crown. The two stared at one another for quite a while before she slipped into the water. He left an offering of Lembas as a symbol of friendship, to show her he meant no ill.
This continued for a time, strange offerings of gifts on both parties. Two beings wanting to connect with one another. It was said that Naiads had reason to fear men, but an elf? They shared not the same language, but rather struck up a friendship in gesture and laughter. One would often find Legolas back in town with strange objects from the bottom of rock pools or seaweed woven into his braid.
He would only smile when asked where it came from, not wanting to break the trust of who was so greatly earned.
